    TURF REPLACEMENT IN WICKFORD

Out with the Old, In with Fresh Turf

Turf replacement is the process of removing an existing natural lawn that has worn out, thinned, become patchy or failed, and replacing it with freshly prepared ground and new natural turf. It is a full replacement — not an isolated patch repair — and it gives the lawn a clean start.

We carry out turf replacement for residential gardens across Wickford and South Essex. The existing turf and any unsuitable surface material are removed, the ground is assessed for compaction and drainage, the growing layer is improved where needed, and fresh turf is laid with staggered joints and firm contact with the soil.

On a free site visit we assess the existing lawn, the soil, the drainage and the shade, talk through whether replacement is the right option, and provide a clear written quotation covering removal, preparation and installation.

    WHAT REPLACEMENT INVOLVES

    What Does Turf Replacement Include?

Turf replacement includes three stages. First, the existing lawn is stripped — the old turf and any compacted or unsuitable surface material are removed. Second, the ground is prepared: the soil is assessed, levelled, and improved where the growing layer is poor. Drainage is considered at this stage, as a lawn that failed due to waterlogging will fail again if the drainage is not addressed.

Third, fresh natural turf is laid on the prepared ground. The turf joints are staggered to avoid continuous seams, and each roll is pressed into firm contact with the soil so the roots establish quickly. Edging is completed where the lawn meets patios, paths or borders, and the finished lawn is watered in.

Waste removal of the old turf is normally included within the agreed quotation. We also explain the early care needed — keeping people and pets off the turf while it establishes, and watering in the first weeks.

    SUITABILITY

When Turf Replacement Is a Good Choice

Lawns that have thinned, become patchy or failed across a large area
Gardens where the existing lawn has compacted soil or poor drainage
Properties where the lawn has been damaged by building or landscaping work
Gardens where the existing grass is the wrong type for the intended use
Lawns that have deteriorated over many years and are beyond oversowing or feeding
Gardens being re-landscaped where the lawn needs to start fresh as part of the new layout

    OPTIONS

    Turf Replacement Options

There are choices within a turf replacement project. The right combination depends on the garden, the soil, the drainage and how the lawn will be used.

    Lawn Size and Shape

The area to be replaced is measured and the turf ordered to suit, minimising waste and joins.

    Soil Improvement

Where the existing soil is compacted or poor, the growing layer can be improved before the new turf is laid.

    Ground Levelling

Levels are set to ensure even drainage and a smooth finish, addressing dips and bumps in the existing lawn.

    Drainage Considerations

Where the old lawn failed due to waterlogging, drainage is assessed and addressed as part of the preparation.

    Lawn Edging

Edging installed or refreshed where the lawn meets patios, paths or borders to give a clean, defined edge.

    Waste Removal

Removal and disposal of the old turf and unsuitable material, normally included within the quotation.

    THE PROCESS

    Our Turf Replacement Process

Replacement timing depends on the lawn area, access, ground conditions, the amount of existing turf to remove, drainage work required, and the weather. We confirm a realistic schedule before booking.

    1. 1Discuss the existing lawn, what has gone wrong and what you want from the new lawn
    2. 2Assess the garden, soil, drainage, shade and access
    3. 3Confirm the area to be replaced and the preparation required
    4. 4Provide a written quotation covering removal, preparation and installation
    5. 5Remove the existing turf and any unsuitable surface material
    6. 6Remove and dispose of old turf and waste from the site
    7. 7Assess and improve the soil where the growing layer is poor or compacted
    8. 8Establish the correct levels and address drainage where needed
    9. 9Install or refresh lawn edging where required
    10. 10Lay fresh natural turf with staggered joints and firm soil contact
    11. 11Water the new lawn and check the finish
    12. 12Explain the early care needed and leave the working area tidy

    QUOTATION FACTORS

What Affects the Cost of Turf Replacement?

We do not provide fixed prices without seeing the garden. The written quotation is based on the work involved, and several factors influence the final figure.

    Lawn area to be replaced
Amount and condition of existing turf to remove and dispose of
Soil condition and whether improvement is needed
Drainage considerations and any remedial work
    Ground levelling required
Access to the garden for removal and installation
    Lawn edging installation or refresh
Connections to existing patios, paths and borders

The written quotation will explain the agreed work, materials and preparation so you know exactly what is included before the replacement begins.
