The Brief
This garden project near Basildon involved replacing tired, dated paving with a structured and comfortable outdoor layout. The homeowner wanted a functional area for relaxing and entertaining outside, with a sheltered sunken seating area and central fire pit as the primary feature.
The rest of the garden needed to feel organised and easy to navigate. The design called for integrated timber decking, a central slate paving pathway, custom sleeper benches and raised planter beds to seamlessly link each section of the garden together.
Our team carefully planned the excavation levels, access points and material transitions so each part of the layout worked in harmony. The finished space delivers a sheltered seating zone, clear routes through the garden and a robust combination of stone, timber and greenery.

What We Installed
We began by excavating the old surface materials, clearing the site and preparing a sub-base across all zones. The layout runs natural slate paving down steps into the sunken seating area, with retaining walls finished in matching slate cladding to maintain structural support and clean lines.
At the lower level, our team built timber decking alongside custom railway sleeper benches and steps surrounding the central fire pit zone. A secondary decking terrace was installed at the rear of the garden, with a natural slate pathway running down the center to link all functional areas.
To complete the build, raised sleeper planters were constructed around the garden perimeter, and low-voltage LED lighting was integrated into the seating and planter areas for evening use.

Maintenance Suggestions
To keep slate paving, timber decking and sleeper joinery looking their best year after year, we recommend following these care guidelines:
Natural Slate Paving Care
Sweep regularly with a soft broom to remove leaves and organic debris. Every spring, wash down the slate using a mild detergent or stone cleaner and clean water. Avoid harsh wire brushes or acidic cleaners that could scratch or discolour natural slate surfaces.
Timber Decking & Sleeper Maintenance
Keep deck surfaces clean to prevent algae build-up during wet winter months. Apply a quality exterior timber deck oil or preservative coat annually to maintain moisture resistance and protect the timber grain from UV fading.
Lighting & Drainage Inspection
Periodically clear fallen leaves from drainage points around the sunken seating zone to ensure water drains freely. Inspect LED light fittings annually to ensure seals remain watertight.
