    PERGOLA CONSTRUCTION IN WICKFORD

Timber Pergolas Built for Your Garden

A pergola is a timber garden structure made up of vertical posts supporting horizontal beams and spaced rafters. It provides a defined overhead frame over a patio, decking area or seating space without enclosing the sides or forming a roofed room.

We design and build bespoke pergolas made to measure for your garden. The dimensions, post spacing and rafter layout are worked out around the available space, the position of the patio or deck beneath, and how you want to use the area — whether that is shade, climbing plants or simply defining a zone within the garden.

On a free site visit we assess the ground, access and levels, talk through the options, and provide a clear written quotation covering the agreed work and materials.

    HOW PERGOLAS ARE BUILT

What Is a Pergola and How Is It Constructed?

A pergola is an open timber frame — posts support beams, and beams carry rafters spaced at regular intervals. It is not a roofed building and does not provide the same protection from rain as a garden room with a solid roof. What it does provide is structure, shade from angled sun, and a frame for climbing plants to grow over time.

Construction starts with the posts. Each post is set in a concrete foundation at the correct depth for the ground and the height of the structure. The horizontal beams are fixed across the posts, and the rafters are spaced along the beams to give the open rafter layout that defines a pergola.

A pergola can be freestanding within the garden or positioned to connect with a patio, decking area or garden boundary. The timber is pressure-treated for outdoor durability, and the dimensions are made to measure so the structure fits the space rather than forcing the space to fit a standard size.

    SUITABILITY

When a Pergola Is a Good Choice

Patios or decking areas where overhead structure and partial shade are wanted
Gardens where a defined seating or dining zone helps organise the layout
Homeowners who want a frame for climbing plants to grow over several seasons
Outdoor spaces where a solid roof is not needed but visual structure is
Gardens with space for a freestanding timber feature that blends with the landscape
Properties where a made-to-measure structure is preferred over an off-the-shelf kit

    OPTIONS

    Pergola Options

Pergolas can be configured in several ways. The right combination depends on the garden layout, ground conditions, positioning and how the space beneath will be used.

    Freestanding Pergolas

Pergolas built as independent structures within the garden, positioned over a patio, lawn or seating area.

    Patio-Connected Pergolas

Pergolas positioned to align with an existing or newly laid patio, creating a covered seating or dining zone.

    Decking-Integrated Pergolas

Pergolas built over decking areas, with posts set to suit the deck structure and ground beneath.

    Made-to-Measure Dimensions

Post height, beam span and rafter spacing worked out for your specific space rather than fixed standard sizes.

    Open Rafter Layouts

Rafters spaced to balance shade and openness, adjustable depending on sun angle and preferred cover.

    Climbing Plant Support

Rafter and beam spacing designed to allow climbing plants to establish and spread over the structure.

    THE PROCESS

    Our Pergola Construction Process

Construction timing depends on the pergola size, ground conditions, access, the chosen timber specification and the weather. We confirm a realistic schedule before booking.

    1. 1Discuss the intended use, position and preferred dimensions of the pergola
    2. 2Assess the garden, ground conditions, access and any changes in level
    3. 3Confirm the timber specification, post layout and rafter spacing
    4. 4Provide a written quotation covering the agreed work and materials
    5. 5Set out the post positions and excavate foundation holes
    6. 6Install concrete foundations and set posts plumb and secure
    7. 7Fix horizontal beams across the posts at the correct height
    8. 8Cut and fix rafters at the agreed spacing along the beams
    9. 9Check alignment, levels and overall squareness of the structure
    10. 10Apply timber treatment where required and leave the working area tidy

    QUOTATION FACTORS

What Affects the Cost of Pergola Construction?

We do not provide fixed prices without seeing the garden. The written quotation is based on the work involved, and several factors influence the final figure.

Overall dimensions — post height, beam span and rafter quantity
Ground conditions and foundation depth required
Timber specification and treatment grade selected
Access for materials and equipment into the garden
Positioning relative to existing patios, decking or boundaries
Any integration with adjoining garden features or planting
Removal of existing structures where included
Waste removal included within the quotation

The written quotation will explain the agreed work, materials and preparation so you know exactly what is included before construction begins.
