    HARDSCAPING IN WICKFORD

The Built Elements That Hold a Garden Together

Hardscaping — often called hard landscaping in the UK — refers to the structural and built elements of a garden. These are the non-living parts of the landscape: patios, paths, steps, edging, retaining features, pergolas and the interfaces between them. Where soft landscaping is lawns, soil and planting, hardscaping is the construction work that gives the garden its shape, levels and usable surfaces.

We plan and install hardscaping as part of a coordinated residential garden project. That means the patio connects to the path, the path meets the lawn edge, the steps sit at the right level, and the retaining features hold the ground where it needs holding. Each element is built to work with the others rather than installed in isolation.

On a free site visit we assess the garden, levels, drainage and access, talk through what you want from the space, and provide a clear written quotation covering the agreed work.

    WHAT HARDSCAPING INCLUDES

    What Does Hardscaping Cover?

Hardscaping covers the built elements of a garden project. This typically includes patios and paved areas, garden paths, steps between levels, edging to define surfaces, retaining features to hold soil or create level changes, and pergolas or other timber structures where they are part of the build.

It also covers the ground preparation beneath these elements — excavation, sub-base compaction, drainage and levelling. Without this groundwork, the visible surfaces will not perform properly. A patio laid without a prepared sub-base will sink; a path without edging will spread; steps without proper foundations will shift.

Hardscaping differs from the main Landscaping page because it focuses specifically on the built and structural elements. Where the Landscaping page covers the overall coordination of a garden project, this page is about the construction work itself — the hard materials, the levels, the drainage and the connections between built features.

    SUITABILITY

When Hardscaping Work Is a Good Choice

Gardens that need level changes managed with steps, retaining features or terracing
Properties where a new patio, path or seating area is being created
Gardens where built elements need to connect and work together as one project
Homeowners coordinating hard landscaping with new lawns, planting or fencing
Properties where drainage, levels or ground preparation need attention before surfacing
Gardens where edging, steps or retaining features are needed to define and hold the layout

    OPTIONS

    Hardscaping Options

Hardscaping can include a range of built elements. The right combination depends on the garden layout, levels, how the space is used and the overall project scope.

    Patios and Paved Areas

Porcelain, natural stone or block paving laid on a prepared sub-base with proper edging and drainage.

    Garden Paths

Paths in porcelain, stone, block paving or gravel connecting the key areas of the garden.

    Steps and Level Changes

Steps built to manage changes in level, in matching or complementary materials to the adjoining surfaces.

    Edging

Edging in timber, stone, block or steel to define surfaces and hold materials in place.

    Retaining Features

Sleeper walls, rendered beds or stone retaining features to hold soil and create level changes.

    Pergolas and Structures

Timber pergolas and garden structures integrated with the hard landscaping where part of the project.

    THE PROCESS

    Our Hardscaping Installation Process

Installation timing depends on the project size, number of elements, ground conditions, access, the chosen materials and the weather. We confirm a realistic schedule before booking.

    1. 1Discuss the proposed work, intended use and overall garden layout
    2. 2Assess the garden, ground conditions, levels, drainage and access
    3. 3Confirm the layout, materials and sequence of works
    4. 4Provide a written quotation covering the agreed work and materials
    5. 5Set out the areas and excavate to the required depths
    6. 6Install sub-bases, foundations, edging and drainage as relevant
    7. 7Lay paving, build steps, install retaining features and structures in sequence
    8. 8Check levels, falls, alignment and connections between elements
    9. 9Complete adjoining edges and interfaces with lawns, fencing or planting
    10. 10Remove waste included within the quotation and leave the area tidy

    QUOTATION FACTORS

What Affects the Cost of Hardscaping?

We do not provide fixed prices without seeing the garden. The written quotation is based on the work involved, and several factors influence the final figure.

Area and number of built elements included in the project
Materials selected — porcelain, natural stone, block paving, timber
Ground conditions and depth of excavation required
Level changes, steps and retaining features
    Drainage considerations and ground preparation
    Access for materials and equipment
Removal of existing surfaces or structures
Connections with lawns, fencing, planting and other garden features

The written quotation will explain the agreed work, materials and preparation so you know exactly what is included before installation begins.
