    GRAVEL DRIVEWAYS IN WICKFORD

A Driveway Built on Proper Groundwork

A gravel driveway is a residential driveway surface built from a compacted sub-base, edging restraints and a selected layer of gravel. It is a traditional driveway finish that suits many South Essex properties, but it only works when the groundwork beneath it is done properly.

We build new gravel driveways from the ground up. That means excavating to the right depth, installing a compacted sub-base, fitting edging restraints to hold the gravel, and addressing drainage so water does not pool on or beside the surface. The gravel is then spread to an even depth over a weed-control membrane where appropriate.

On a free site visit we assess the existing levels, access and ground, talk through gravel options, and provide a clear written quotation covering the agreed work.

    HOW GRAVEL DRIVEWAYS ARE BUILT

What Goes Into a Properly Built Gravel Driveway

A gravel driveway is not simply gravel spread on the ground. The surface you see is the top layer of a built-up construction. Beneath the gravel is a compacted sub-base — typically crushed hardcore — that takes the weight of vehicles and stops the surface from rutting or sinking.

Edging restraints are installed along the driveway to contain the gravel and keep it from spreading onto paths, borders or the pavement. A weed-control membrane is laid over the sub-base where appropriate to reduce weed growth from below. The gravel is then spread to an even depth and compacted where suitable.

Drainage is considered as part of the build. Gravel is permeable, but the ground beneath and around it needs to manage water properly. On sloping sites or properties with particular drainage conditions, gravel may not be the most suitable choice, and we will say so during the site visit.

    SUITABILITY

When a Gravel Driveway Is a Good Choice

Properties where a traditional gravel finish suits the appearance of the home
Driveways with relatively flat or gently sloping ground
Homeowners who want a permeable surface that manages water naturally
Gardens where gravel blends with paths, borders and front garden planting
Properties where the existing ground can be excavated and prepared properly
Homeowners who understand that gravel requires occasional topping up and raking
