The Brief
The homeowners of this new-build property in Billericay had an undeveloped back garden that was essentially a blank canvas. They required a practical, structured garden that could handle daily family life while offering an attractive setup for entertaining guests.
The brief called for distinct, interconnected zones across the garden: a durable porcelain patio immediately outside the house for dining, a low-maintenance lawn for children to play, and a feature seating pavilion. The centerpiece was to be a custom timber pergola built on-site to fit the specific corner dimensions of the plot.
Our team designed the layout to ensure smooth foot-traffic flow, integrated LED lighting for evening use, and carefully chosen materials that complement the house architecture.

What We Installed
We began by preparing concrete footings for the structural posts and laying a compacted sub-base across the patio and decking footprints. A modern porcelain patio was laid directly off the rear house doors, finished with clean pointed joints.
Rather than using a pre-fabricated kit, our carpenters constructed the custom timber pergola framework entirely on-site from heavy-section pressure-treated timber. The timber posts were routed to direct rainwater cleanly away, and overhead shade beams were positioned to filter afternoon sunlight.
Beneath the pergola, we installed composite decking to form a durable, slip-resistant outdoor lounge area. Raised planter walls clad in matching stone tiles were constructed along the borders, with low-voltage warm LED lights fitted into the structure for subtle evening ambiance. Finally, fresh cultivated lawn turf was laid to complete the central garden area.
Materials Used
Porcelain Patio Paving
Frost-resistant grey porcelain paving slabs laid on a full mortar bed for the main dining terrace.
Pressure-Treated Timber Framework
Heavy-duty structural softwood posts and crossbeams treated for long-term weather resistance across Essex seasons.
Slip-Resistant Composite Decking
Low-maintenance composite deck boards fitted inside the pergola footprint, offering a comfortable, splinter-free surface.
Integrated LED Lighting & Concrete Footings
Weatherproof LED wall and post lights wired to custom planter walls, supported by deep concrete pad foundations.
The Finished Garden
The completed garden makeover in Billericay transforms a featureless new-build yard into a cohesive, multi-zoned outdoor living area. The custom pergola creates a dedicated sheltered spot for relaxing, while the porcelain patio and striped lawn provide practical spaces for dining and play.

Maintenance Suggestions
To keep porcelain paving, composite decking, custom timber joinery and lawn turfing in pristine condition, we suggest these periodic care routines:
Porcelain Paving & Composite Decking Cleaning
Sweep the patio and composite deck regularly to clear fallen leaves and organic matter. Wash down in spring with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. Composite decking requires no painting or staining, while porcelain tiles resist staining naturally.
Timber Pergola Care
Inspect the pressure-treated timber beams annually. Apply a clear exterior UV-protective timber oil every few years if you wish to preserve the original wood tone and prevent natural weathering.
Lawn & Lighting Inspection
Mow the lawn regularly during growing months with blades set to a consistent height. Wipe LED light lenses periodically to ensure light output remains clear and bright.
