The Brief
The client wanted to update a tired back garden in Basildon with a clearer, more defined layout and a better balance between paving, lawn space, and planting borders. The original garden lacked structure and usable entertaining space.
Key requests included laying warm, textured natural stone paving, introducing gentle curved lines to soften the garden layout, and installing a new central lawn. One distinctive requirement was using vertically positioned timber railway sleepers cut at staggered heights to create a striking, sculptural border edge along the perimeter.
Our team designed and constructed a practical, low-maintenance garden that combines natural textures with strong structural definition.

What We Installed
We began by excavating the old lawn and worn paving, levelling the site and laying a solid MOT Type 1 aggregate sub-base for the main patio areas and lawn foundation.
Modak Indian sandstone paving was laid on a full mortar bed with gentle flowing curves to guide foot traffic around the garden naturally. To create a crisp transition between the patio and lawn, dark charcoal block pavers were set as a permanent border edge.
In the centre, we prepared the soil and laid fresh cultivated lawn turf for a smooth, striped green surface. Along the boundary, pressure-treated timber railway sleepers were fixed vertically into concrete at staggered heights, creating a bold decorative border that defines the garden perimeter.

Maintenance Suggestions
To keep sandstone paving, new lawn turf and timber sleeper features looking pristine, we suggest following these simple care routines:
Natural Sandstone Paving Care
Sweep paving regularly to remove fallen leaves and sand. Clean periodically using a mild, pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft broom. Applying a breathable stone sealer every 2–3 years helps protect against organic staining while maintaining natural colour depth.
Lawn Turf Care
Mow regularly during spring and summer at a height of 25–35mm, keeping mower blades sharp for clean cuts. Water thoroughly during dry spells and apply seasonal lawn fertiliser in spring and autumn to promote root strength.
Vertical Timber Sleeper Maintenance
Timber sleepers are pressure-treated for outdoor durability. To preserve their warm timber colour and protect against weathering, apply a suitable exterior wood preserver or oil once every 12–18 months.
