Closeboard Fence Installation
Closeboard fencing creates a strong, private garden boundary built to suit the property, levels and boundary line. Feather-edge timber boards are fixed to horizontal rails and secured posts, giving a continuous run that follows the ground rather than fighting it.

CLOSEBOARD FENCING IN WICKFORD
A Strong, Private Boundary Built for Your Garden
Closeboard fence installation gives Wickford homeowners a solid, private boundary that is built around the garden rather than ordered off the shelf. Each run is constructed on site using feather-edge timber boards, horizontal rails and secure posts, so the fence follows the boundary line and adjusts to changes in ground level.
We build closeboard fencing with either timber or concrete posts, paired with timber or concrete gravel boards at the base. The choice depends on the ground, the boundary and how long you want the fence to stand. On a free site visit we talk through the options that suit your property and give you a clear, written quotation.
Whether the boundary is flat and straightforward or slopes and steps along the garden, closeboard fencing is built to follow the ground. The result is a continuous, private timber fence that sits well and lasts.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
What Is Closeboard Fencing?
Closeboard fencing is built from vertical overlapping feather-edge boards fixed to horizontal timber rails, which are supported by posts set at regular intervals along the boundary. A gravel board sits at the base to keep the timber clear of soil and moisture.
Because the boards are fixed individually, the fence is constructed as a continuous run rather than assembled from pre-made panels. This allows the fencing to follow sloping or uneven ground, step down changes in level, and negotiate corners and angles without gaps.
The main difference from standard lap panels is strength and adaptability. Lap panels are manufactured to a fixed size and dropped between posts. Closeboard fencing is built on site, board by board, so it conforms to the boundary and can be repaired board by board if a section is ever damaged.

SUITABILITY
When Closeboard Fencing Is a Good Choice
Closeboard fencing suits a range of residential boundary situations. It is a sensible choice when:
FENCING OPTIONS
Closeboard Fencing Options
There are genuine choices within closeboard fencing. The right combination depends on the boundary, the ground and how the garden is used. We do not recommend a single configuration without seeing the property first.
Timber Posts
Pressure-treated timber posts set in concrete. A traditional choice that matches the feather-edge boards and keeps the fence looking consistent along the run.
Concrete Posts
Concrete posts will not rot at ground level and generally last longer than timber. Heavier to install but a sensible option for boundaries exposed to damp ground.
Timber Gravel Boards
Timber gravel boards keep the feather-edge boards clear of soil and reduce moisture contact at the base. Matched to the timber posts for a consistent look.
Concrete Gravel Boards
Concrete gravel boards will not decay and provide a solid base for the fencing. Often paired with concrete posts for a longer-lasting boundary.
Built on Site
Closeboard fencing built on site follows the boundary exactly. Boards are fixed individually to rails, allowing the fence to step, rake and turn corners without gaps.
Heights and Gates
Different fence heights are available where suitable and lawful. Gate integration can be included where the boundary requires an access point, matched to the fencing.
THE PROCESS
Our Closeboard Fence Installation Process

Installation timing depends on boundary length, access, ground conditions, existing fencing, the chosen post and gravel-board system, and the weather. We do not promise an exact timeframe, but we confirm a realistic schedule before booking.
